I have been with Great Whites Orthodontics for almost 2 years. My duties involve dental assisting, reception and sterilization. I really enjoy working at Great Whites because we have some of the best staff and patients. As a result, I receive a lot of job satisfaction!

CONTINUING EDUCATION/ LATEST AND GREATEST

• Sally and Natalie attended a recent lecture on current "cavity" technology. Sally converted the highlights into an Easter story: When my mom, dad, and brothers went to raid Farmer Joe's carrot patch, I had to stay home because I was feeling sick. I ate a piece of Easter chocolate, hoping it might make me feel better. Instead, one of my teeth started to ache and throb. Maybe I had a cavity! Could it be because I always brush my teeth really fast with that old ratty toothbrush? The next day, Dr. I. Fixcavities told me to brush and floss regularly, taking my time to be thorough, to visit him regularly, and to get a new soft toothbrush when the old toothbrush starts wearing out. He also told me that cavities are an "infectious disease" (kind of like a cold). The best treatment for cavities is PREVENTION using fluoride to strengthen the enamel and sealants to protect it.

• Nancy attended a lecture on "open bite" in Vancouver recently. Open bite is when the front teeth don't contact when you bite down on the back teeth, leading to overuse of back teeth and underuse of front teeth. One of the lecturer's suggestions was to take Granny's advice: don't wash your food down with what you are drinking ... take time to chew and swallow properly. His point was that it helps to train the tongue and lips to function properly which may, in turn, promote development of normal bite. He did not offer any proof, but we thought your Granny might like to know the lecturer agrees with her!
